Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Umm..yes and no.

Some motherboards/chipsets support both 32bit only an 64bit/32bit x86-64/AMD64/EM64 CPUs.

But I dont think that is what you are asking :S

No, as the number of pins on the chip are not going to match the number of holes in the socket.

If you have a socket LGA775 32 bit Pentium/Celeron it will work on newer socket LGA775 boards that also support 64 bit CPUs. There are also some very early Sempron CPUs for socket 754 that are 32 bit only, but work in 64 bit 754 boards. So a general no is not the correct answer, the correct answer would be: it depends.

From a practical point, one can get a 64 bit system and generally use almost any 32 bit OS or applications. I understand it wasn't asked and you guys know that.

Wasn't there an special Intel 32 bit chip for a few months that could run in 64 bit mode? Pretty sure we had one of those goofy deals. It didn't last long.
