Is an Iomega 16x10x40 ext usb cdrw compatible

Hello

I am at my wits end trying to get this cdrw to burn properly. I have tried different media, configurations, created many coasters, crashed my system several times but still to no avail. I am using SuSE 8.1, kernel 2.4.19 and Debian 3 on 2.4.20 kernel, on a laptop.

I have managed to burn a 550mb mkisofs img file using cdrecord sucessfully but then the next time I tried it just crashes the system completely. The cdrw is recognised by cdrecord as scsi on /dev/sr1 and by dmesg. I also found the vendor and product id and entered it in usbmgr.conf file and usbmgr recognised this and loaded the modules. I have an internal dvd drive in each machine and initially it is recognised as /dev/hdh ide-cd but having put hdh=scsi and /sbin/modprobe/ide-scsi in /etc/init.d/boot.local the dvd is recognised as /dev/sr0 ide-scsi.

Still I get crashes.

I would appreciates anyone who has this machines working to let me know and if possible to show me how or indeed if this machine is in the end incompatible with linux. I feel it is no far away from working but then again maybe it is.

Please put me out of my misery

Check the module load, is it working under usb-uhci/usb-ohci or usb-ehci? You know that the limitations of USB 1.1 will only let the kid run at about 4x write or re-write, just because you can't push more then 1Mb per second over the wire. If its plugged into a USB 2.0 slot, make certain that the ehci module is loaded instead of the uhci/ohci

2.4.19 and 2.4.20 have about the same upper end USB support... got anything fin in the logs from the crash? Like /var/log/messages?

I have not got many replies to this question. Must be nobody uses this cd writer in linux. Hard to believe. However, further developements are that I have tried it with the new SuSE 8.2 and all seems fine. I have copied the SuSE disks and also a music cd and all went without a hitch. I hope I am not being premature.

I believe it is due to the improved hotplug system, and generally the improved kernel 2.4.20.

Just to add I am finding SuSE to be very good, the best distro I have tried yet, this includes Mandrake 9, Redhat 8.2 and Debian 3. It installed on both laptop and desktop without a hitch, and has detected most hardware automatically, except for the pcmcia modem which had to be added manually and the ACPID (power control, battery etc) did not work.

Hi. I've just managed to get my Iomega USB CDRW (48x24x48x) working with redhat linux 9. Previously, if I tried booting the computer with the drive attached, it would freeze when detecting modules. If I hot-plugged it, the whole machine would freeze, requiring a reboot.

All I had to do was change a bios setting (on my A7N266-VM, bios 1005) for usb legacy support. I changed the value from primary to disabled. Dunno what board you're running or what's in the bios, but it appears that the drive now works, even when hotplugged. cdrecord --scanbus lists the drive, and I managed to erase a cdrw using k3b. I haven't tried any other tests yet.

PS: I just burnt data to a CDRW disk, and verified that it was readable on another machine. It seems fine, so I assume that burning is working 100%.
