iPod on Linux and other mp3 players
 

About iPod...
Does iPod (mini) work well with Linux? Can I put songs I already got to iPod or do I need some kind of software to download music that is not free? Does iPod support MP3 and OGG?

About other mp3 players...
What mp3 player do you recommend (OGG support is needed, 1 GB or more, USB, Linux support)?

My previous mp3 player (Jens Of Sweden) got broken so I need to buy a new one, so that's why I'm asking these things. I heard that iPod is good, so now I want your, Linux user's, opinion.

On SUSE, I had to tweak the kernel, but now it works flawless.

You can upload your own mp3's as well as files from the iTunes store. However, you can't play the later ones on Linux. I don't think that ogg is supported.
I love my iPOD mini ;)

I have bought two iAudio mp3 players. They both work flawlessly in Linux - my girlfriend has an iAudio 5 512MB and my M3 40GB are used exclusively with Linux. The M3 has support for Ogg, FLAC and firmware updates are released regularily with new features. Definitely an iPod killer. :D

Wow, that sure sounds great. How much did it cost?

Ive been looking at the Neuros II a lot lately. Cant decide between Neuros II or iPod.

The firmware on the Neuros is opensource so it has lots of cool features. Supports ogg and lots of other file types.
Its worth a look.

well i have a ipod shuffle and used ubuntu .. ubuntu reconised it as a usb storage BUT when i used err i forgot what its called the free open source ipod software it screwd my ipod up .. not a good experience .. so i had to go back on windows and format my ipod and that fixed it

Since you're in Finland perhaps you can relate a bit to the prices here in Sweden: I paid about 3400SEK in October for my 40GB M3. After having used it for more than half a year I must say I am very pleased with my this piece of hardware. Since it requires no additional drivers by Linux, MacOS or Windows I can move around big volumes of data without hazzle. I keep my cvs tree backed up on it, among other things. :)
