iPod issues after reformat

My brother has an iPod and he desperately wanted my music (since he doesn't have a computer just yet). So I had a few guides to help my through it, but I think I did a pretty good job. I had to reformat it to FAT32, since that's what the guide recommended and I'm still on 2.4.x for my kernel, so it doesn't have HFS/HFS+ support. Anyways, ever since I formatted it, it has been behaving oddly. It saves the star rating given but it doesn't use them to sort the tracks according to the Best Rated playlist (maybe I have to rate them within gtkpod?), when the battery is low, the scrollwheel locks up and most times you have to recharge it before the thing works, it also seems to take a considerably longer amount of time to naviagate. Is this normal? I feel really bad, since its not my iPod, so I'd like to be able to make it work the best as possible. Is there a firmware upgrade that would solve my problems? I'm using whatever came with this, its a 20 GB new style iPod (touch-sensitive controls and a backlight etc.) Any ideas?
