iPod Classic
 

I have an 80GB iPod Classic and have successfully installed libgpod 0.6.0. I have compiled and installed Amarok 1.4.9.1. I have gotten Amarok to recognize the iPod and able to see the music on it.

However, now when I disconnect my iPod from my computer, it no longer is able to play any music on it. It says that there is no music, but I know it is still there, because Amarok can see it, and the iPod only has 44GB free. Also, if I try to sync to the iPod, I get this error:

"Your iPod's Firewire GUID is required for correctly updating its music database, but it is not known. See http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Media_Device:IPod for more information."

I have set the Firewire GUID in the SysInfo file on the iPod, so I do not understand why I am getting this error. Also, whenever I tell Amarok to disconnect my iPod, it ejects my CD drive and gives this error:

"Media device: failed to write iPod database"


Any suggestions as to what I can do?

My suggestion, try Floola, that's the answer of linux for iTunes.

I have actually tried floola, but it says my FWID is invalid. I am pasting the same Serial that shows up when I do this:

lsusb -v | grep -i Serial

Would i get better luck posting this in the software forum?

I've just bought an Ipod classic, copied some music with itunes, and then accessed to it with amarok, and experienced exactly the same problem...

the "funny" thing is that after ipod was telling me there was nothing in it, I could still see all the music in it when connecting to it with amarok again...

I had to restore it with itunes...

did you find any solution?

I didn't find any solution with amarok. But I had to do a project for work, and had to dual-boot ubuntu with Slackware. And while I don't like Ubuntu over Slackware (never will), one of few cool things I have found in the distro, is that it is compatible with my iPod by default. It just recognizes it, and i am able to access all the music, add music, change my playlists, and everything all by default using the Rhythmbox Music Player. Download Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy), and you shouldn't have any issues at all when plugging your iPod in through USB. I didn't. Hope that helps.

So I upgraded to ubuntu 8.04, and now, probably due to the upgrade of libgtkpod, I could add and remove songs, and the songs are still there after disconnection (after saving). Note that I haven't tried with amarok, but with gtkpod.

However, the cover gallery does not work anymore (I'm talking about the automatic slide show under the menu).

After a restore with itunes the slide show works as before.

Yes, I have also experienced this problem. I don't know what is exactly causing the issue, but it looks like when you synchronize the iPod using gtkpod, Amorok, or Rythmbox for that matter, they modify something in the files just enough on the iPod to lose the cover art. It's not that the cover flow is not working, its that the album artwork is not there. Probably something to do with the way Linux formats it's image files on the iPod. It probably cannot read the files.

I was able to restore most of the album artwork using Rythmbox's ability to connect to a server and download the album artwork. I didn't get all the artwork only because I have some custom built albums for artists that I have full discographies for. But once I got the artwork synchronized back with the iPod, the album artwork floated like it is supposed to at the main menu when "Music" is highlighted. Hope that helps.
