Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Investigating Possible hardware failure

Hi there --

One of our servers, running Debian 4.0, is experiencing random system hangs. The computer does not lose power, but it falls into such a state
that the only remedy is to reboot the system.

I have checked the message log file of the server, and there does not appear to be anything out of the ordinary except for text indicating that a boot is taking place.

I suspect the issue is hardware, and my plan was to use a live distro that is especially good for diagnosing hardware failure. Can anyone make any suggestions in that regard? Thanks.

It's not exactly a linux distro, but Ultimate Boot CD is a good way to check hardware. If you're looking specifically for a linux boot CD, I know that the live Ubuntu DVD has the "MemTest" utility.
