Hi everybody. I want to buy an ADSL modem. Could someone introduce me a good choice that is fully supported with linux(especially with Debian/Ubuntu) and is not so expensive??
Google is your friend. http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/
Do a search on modem and you'll find a bunch of them. If not satisfied try googling hcl debian or hcl ubuntu
cheers,
jdk
I would think any External DSL modem with a Ethernet port should work fine..
Make you a good deal (cheap !!) on a Broadstream External DSL modem.. I no longer have DSL so it's just sitting here doing nothing..
Let me know if you are interested I'll get the model number and info and you can see if it's compatible with your provider.
I also have an external DSL bridge from my previous DSL provider. (PPPoE provider)
When I say cheap, I'm thinking $5.00 + shipping.. are you in the US ?

Thanks.
Who is going to provide you with 'ADSL'? That provider may have some restrictions for hardware type.

Most providers give you a modem when you sign up to their service for a minimum of 12months.
If it has an ethernet port, you'll be fine. If it does wireless too, even better.
Many people (like me) eventually throw the "free" one away, because they are ugly and do not do all that I'd like (but they do connect linux to the internet, via ethernet cable at least).
Then I went out and bought myself a Netgear DG834G (probably old now) and never looked back.

A lot of the providers where I am at either, Sell you the modem (if you sign up during the right promotion you get a rebate to cancel out the cost of the modem) or if you sign up for one of the more expensive plans the modem is free. but the cheapest plan, ends up paying for the modem, with no chance for a freebie or a rebate..
or the providers 'rents' you the modem for a monthly fee.. in which case buying a modem turns out to be cheaper int he long run provided you have the service long enough.
I bought a cable modem when I signed up for cable Internet, because they 'rent' the cable modem to you, with no option to buy it from them, and I didn't feel like paying yet another $5.00 rental fee every month for a modem.
The providers do anything to make a few extra bucks these days.
