Internal Winmodem Working?

I'm in Slackware 10.1. I recently decided to install the driver for my internal smartlink winmodem, via the smartlink website.

I configured everything in accordance with the smartlink documentation. However, when I attempt to dial out via kppp, the modem responds, I hear a really long handshake (around 30-40 seconds), and then I get this message.

The pppd daemon died unexpectedly!
Exit status: 1
See 'man pppd' for an explanation of the error codes or take a look at the kppp FAQ on http://devel-home.kde.org/~kppp/index.html

When I man pppd I see this explanation for exit status 1.

1 An immediately fatal error of some kind occurred, such as an essential sys_tem call failing, or running out of virtual memory.

Could this be an error caused by kppp or do you think this is something more complex?

Oh on a related note I've set this command to an alias, and I have to issue it before I dial out or nothing's recognized.

Code:
/usr/sbin/slmodemd --country=USA /dev/slamr
I don't have any experience with minicom so please be specific if you think I should try to dial out with it.

Thank you in advance.

What happens if you open an x terminal, su - to become root and give this command:

wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

Does it find the modem? If so, edit /etc/wvdial.conf, removing the semicolons on certain lines and fill in the proper information in those lines.

Now, command wvdial and see if you connect properly. Control-c will disconnect you.

If that works, make a symbolic link named /dev/modem that points to the actual /dev/<whatever your modem was detected as>

ln -sf /dev/<your modem device> /dev/modem.

Now Kppp should work (I think).

I just clicked on the detail button in the dialog box that appears with the mentioned error message and this is what it says.

May 27 04:05:04 word pppd[6301]: By default the remote system is required to authenticate itself
May 27 04:05:04 word pppd[6301]: (because this system has a default route to the internet)
May 27 04:05:04 word pppd[6301]: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so.
May 27 04:05:04 word pppd[6301]: (None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address.)

Edit (We must have posted at the same time)

I don't believe wvdial is installed by default in Slackware. I issued the wvdial command and I got a command not found message.

Ok I installed wvstreams and wvdial and this is what I'm getting when I issue wvdial (I've configured my /etc/wvdial.conf properly with username and password).

Code:
root@word:/# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT3038354492
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT3038354492
CONNECT 49333
Level 3 Comm nas123.den1 UQKT2
Username:/login:/Login:
--> Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
--> Connected, but carrier signal lost! Retrying...
--> Sending: ATDT3038354492
--> Waiting for carrier.
Username:/login:/Login:
Username:/login:/Login:
Username:/login:/Login:
Username:/login:/Login:ATDT3038354492
Password: Idle Timeout
It doesn't give me any time to enter my login id, also even when I enter my password it eventually idles and timesout. So I don't know what's going on. The ATDT3038354492 is the number of the ISP that I'm trying to connect to, I specified my username and password in my /etc/wvdial.conf file.

Are you sure you removed the semicolon and the < and > and put your dialup number, username and passwords in the places indicated?

Your dialup number, username and password go there so that you don't have to enter them each time you connect.

Yeah, I backup the original file and edited the semicolon's and the <'s out. I've used wvdial before and I've never had it prompt me for anything, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Have you had the phone company check the line for excess noise?

Now I am out of ideas.

Yeah, they were out here looking at it not to long ago; because both of our line's kept crossing. It almost look's like some kind of weird authentication issue to me now.

Or maybe even a problem with ppp...

I've connected to this isp with wvdial and kppp before and I've never had to use any non-default int strings or anything like that, so I don't know what's going on.

It's not mission critical, I'm using forwarding with a Smoothwall machine right now. I'd like to finally get this modem up and running though.
