Question internal sparq

I am a newbie to linux and need some help. I am running R.H. 8 on a i686 with ver 2.8.14 kernal. I have 200+ Mb mem.
I am not able to mount my Syquest SparQ 1.0Gb drive.
BIOS sees it, it is in hardware manager as hdd, but I am not able to mount it.
I have seen plenty of help for the parallel port unit, and I have one of those also, but not connected. I would like to use the internal unit for space reasons.
I have tried some of the help given for the parallel port unit without any success.
I would appreciate any and all help. Even if it is only to direct me to another web site.

Thank You'

JW Mullins

Explain this to me like I'm a child. You're trying to mount a regular everyday IDE hard drive that just happens to be 1 Gb manufactured by syquest OR is it one of those removable media (similar to zipdrive) type drives with a 1 Gb limit on the cartridge size? Or something else entirely. I remember hearing something about syquest drives but you'll have to refresh my memory.

Sorry

I am sorry that I did not include this info. I have been working with this for some time and did not think about it. It is the removable media type drive. Also, it is an internal IDE drive. There is alot of info for the external parallel port drive but I have not been able to find anything on the internal drive.

Thank you

So it's an internal removable media drive (kind of like a floppy on steroids) I take it. Hmmm.... I have an IDE floppy. Not as big as your syquest drive but it's still a removable media drive that runs on the IDE bus. What commands are you using to mount your drive? Also, it may be a good idea to post your fstab file.

I have installed Linux 9.0 on Nividia chipset 2 , with AMD athelon 1800+ processor.

I am using Ball mouse, for which the Linux loads the driver as generic PS2 wheel mouse, here i get the mouse pointer as square block of 1 inch. insted of rgular mouse pointer. i have tried different set of mopuse driver but the problem not rectified.

this mouse pointer starts appearing right frm step one of installation where i cannot modify anything,

I have tried to replace this mouse with several other mouses including Microsoft mouse, but problem still persist......

please help to sort out the problem

It would be best if you started a new thread.

John Mullins

I'm thinking the drive would be the same as an IDE floppy type device and that support for IDE floppies would be included in RH default kernel.

Try adding this line to your bootloader. Replace hdx with the correct device for your sparq

append="hdx=ide-floppy"

Then load module

modprobe ide-floppy

Check dmesg output to see if the drive is recognized. I am not familar enough with syquest to be positive on how to mount the drive i.e which partition. Try

mount -t auto /dev/hdx1 /mnt/<your_mount_point>
