Maybe you can help me. I've installed Ubuntu 6.10 in my Dell Dimension 5150 (everything on-board) and the sound isn't working.

It's strange because Ubuntu shows the sound is working well, but only apparently.

I've searched a lot of places in Internet to find a solution, but I didn't get it. Can you help me?

Have you tried to look at ALSA web site?
Here you can find a guide to install the snd_hda_intel driver.

All channel are muted bu default try to use `alsamixer` to unmute them. Check if your module are loader (post your `lsmod`) and if that doesn't work compile a new kernel. You can try alsaconfig but this doesn't work on new sound card. I have 2 HD intel sound card, I can help you in your kernel configuration.

Sorry, I don't know how to determine if the module is loaded or not. I'm new in Linux world.

I've tried that page, but it didn't work.

Wooo you have a lot of thing on modules... do you use all of them?? it's ok for the module... try to unmute channel "front" (to unmute run alsamixer and click M)... try to unmute all that you can and put the volume to the max!

I had exactly the same problem in Umbuntu. I am trying OpenSUSE, but to date I have not been able to get my sound to work with openSUSE either.

Atilac, did you ever get your sound to work? My sound works fine in Windows so I know it's not a chip problem.

Does your sound work when you are logged in as root?

You mention Ubuntu shows it working correctly. Where does it show?

What errors do you get when trying to run xmms or mplayer or?

Have you ran alsaconf?
