intel hda sound card configured with alsaconf but it doesn't work

here's my linux version:
Code:
sasho-pc:/home/sasheto# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.26-2-686 (Debian 2.6.26-26lenny1) (dannf@debian.org) (gcc version 4.1.3 20080704 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-25)) #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 01:53:57 UTC 2010
This is what I'm getting from lspci -v :
Code:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Santa Cruz Operation Device 1043
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
	Memory at fe9f4000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
	Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel <?>
Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link <?>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

audio device info from lshw:
Code:
        *-multimedia
             description: Audio device

             vendor: Intel Corporation
             physical id: 1b
             bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0
             version: 03
             width: 64 bits
             clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
             configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 module=snd_hda_intel
I've already run
apt-get update
apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils alsa-oss

Afterwards, I ran:

Code:
sasho-pc:/home/sasheto# alsaconf
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-intel snd-pcm snd-seq snd-timer snd-seq-device snd-page-alloc.
Building card database...

Loading driver...
Setting default volumes...

===============================================================================

Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

 Have a lot of fun!

sasho-pc:/home/sasheto# alsactl store
amixer gave this:
Code:
sasho-pc:/home/sasheto# amixer
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 42
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 41 [98%] [-1.50dB]
  Front Right: Playback 41 [98%] [-1.50dB]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 255
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB]
  Front Right: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 31
  Front Left: Capture 30 [97%] [28.50dB] [on]
  Front Right: Capture 30 [97%] [28.50dB] [on]
Two things to note:
* I've also checked alsamixer and Master and PCM are MONO for some reason...
* Hitting m for mute also doesn't work with alsamixer

Running aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav from root produced no errors, but also no sound:

Code:
sasho-pc:/home/sasheto# aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
same with speaker-test (no errors and no sound):
Code:
sasho-pc:/home/sasheto# speaker-test

speaker-test 1.0.16

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 8192
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
Using max buffer size 8192

I've rebooted the system, checked that my user is in the audio group, etc

Here's the contents of some relevant conf files:

Code:
sasho-pc:/home/sasheto# cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

You need to set HDA intel to be to be the default card

post the output of

Code:
$ aplay -l
as a user

There are some good instructions here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...ult_sound_card

Here's the output for aplay -l from a user's console:

Code:
sasheto@sasho-pc:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I'm now checking out the URL you mentioned and will edit this post with any new info that I might have as a result.

If anyone else has suggestions/solutions, please don't be shy and share them. I'm grateful for any and all support provided.

*** SOLVED!
the issue was resolved when I did an aptitude full-upgrade to Linux version 2.6.32-5-686 (Debian 2.6.32-28)
afterwards I unmuted with alsamixer and tested the speakers, which worked fine with the new alsa driver:
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.

Configuring Intel 82801I on a Gigabyte Q1580L laptop, running Debian Squeeze (w/ Debian Multimedia)

I have had similar trouble with the Intel 82801I, on a Gigabyte Q1580L laptop, running Debian Squeeze, with the Debian Multimedia repository enabled. A recent update broke my sound, and resulted in jittery intermittent sound output on the internal speaker. I have posted more details below.

In the end, adding the following text to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf solved the problem.

Code:
# ------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Stuff added by EL to get sound to work...
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
# END
Hope this helps.

Regards,
EL
