Unhappy Intel HD audio - can't adjust volume levels

I Can't adjust volume level on my Intel HD audio card running FC3, I have got ALSA to work on my LM70 LG laptop but can't adjust the volume. My sound card it one of those new Intel 24bit cards:

Intel Corp. 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller

I run kmix and I get the little speaker icon, I can mute the sound but can't adjust the volume.
I installed alsa 1.8 perhaps I need a later version 1.9 ?? I have also tried alsamixer
I can mute the sound with the M key not adjust the level ??

Ok so I tried to install ALSA 1.09rc3 and still tits up! Back to 1.08 and I am forced to use the "use software volume control"
with XMMS - realplayerGold works but volume is tits up as well - oh well serves me right for getting a friggin LG laptop with 915 chipset!

Could you let internal modem in LM70 work with Linux?
