Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I checked this forum. I'll try to answer the queries to the best of my abilities.
I'm new to linux myself, so I'm afraid mallgood's post didn't make any sense to me. I have no clue what all those things that were mentioned are. (DRM, agpgart etc.)
Let me just explain what I did to get X working on my system. I had Mandrake 9.0 installed, and it did give the errors that most people here seem to be getting. Therefore, I went to the XFree86 ftp site (
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.3.0/binaries/) and downloaded the binaries for their latest release. All I had to do was run the installer script, and follow the step by step instructions. In most situations, I just went with the default options (owing to my ignorance as far as linux issues are concerned). It worked fine. X started up, at 1024x768 24 bit.
Since then, I have upgraded to Red Hat 9.0, which has inbuilt support for the 845 Chipset. There were absolutely no problems, and everything went fine.
Lady Nighthawk, I had the same problem that you had with the PCI device (PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not available because of resource collisions) - but it did not seem to have any impact on system performance. I suspect it is because you have a winmodem of some sort connected to your motherboard, and it is not recognized by Mandrake. RHL 9.0, however, has not shown any errors so far.
Hope I have answered the queries to the best of my abilities.
Adarsh
