Red face Intel D845GLLY

Hi all,
I was trying to Install RedHat Linux 7.3 on a newly bought Intel machine, The Mother Board is D845GLLY. It has the integrated Video and Sound Card. ( http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd...erbd_d845glly& ).
The chipset is 845GL chipset. Installtion is OK except for the Video configuration. As such it doesn't seems to support 845GL Chip set. I am working with the 16bit configuration, needless to say very difficult to work with.
Another problem is that when I logoff I am not able to see the Desktop again, it just disappears. Same thing happens when i do Ctrl-Alt-F1, then Ctrl-Alt-F7. Is there a patch for this porblem which I can download, or is there any other way I can solve this problem.
Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.
Indru

Hi,
I also had the same problem since I also have 845 GL board and Redhat 7.2 Distrubutation. I tried 2 ways to work around the vidio problem. 1 used Xconfigure with -kickstart option 2. XFree86 with -configure problem none of the work perfectly I also tried vesa which does works when typed only 'X' but with startx it fails. so finally i installed mandreak linux which is working fine on this board! I'm also waiting for the video drivers and sound rivers of 845 GL board!

I just had a mail fest with a guy over this onboard card, there's a link off of the Intel page if you poke around long enough that shows how to get it pretty under VESA, and there have been improvements to support for it under both 2.4.19 and 2.4.20 (due out any day now).

I currently am running a dual boot - xp and red hat 8.

My video card is an onboard Intel 82845GL. My screen resolution can only be 640x480 and 16bit color depth. If i want to increase the resolution i have to lower the depth color to 256colors. Does anybody know any solution to this problem i want ideal to have 1024x768 resolution and 16bit color depth.

I've read that Both RedHat 8 don't properly detect the onboard Intel 845. Is there a linux-compatible driver I could download to fix this so I can run X?

Problem with the video card Intel 845

I am running a dual boot on my Dell machine - win xp and Red Hat 8.0. Linux installed properly, except for the video card configuration. I have an Intel 845GL integrated sound and video card. I am unable to get more than 640x480 resolution in 16 bit color depth, while my monitor and video card support 1024x768 at 32 bit. Can somebody suggest what I ought to do, apart from getting myself a new video card ?

Thanks,
Adarsh Sridhar

I am running a dual boot also on my GATEWAY machine - win xp and Suse 8.1. Linux is installed properly, except for the video card configuration. I have an Intel 845GL integrated sound and video card. I am unable to get more than 640x480 resolution also in 16 bit color depth, while my monitor and video card support 1024x768 at 32 bit. Can anybody help? Sounds like Intel let the ball drop on this. Any Linux drivers available? Please reply to my email; Jmondello@nc.rr.com

Intel more than dropped the ball, they didn't even tell anyone they had a ball at all. If you go into BIOS and push the framebuffer to 8Megs you can get about 1024x768 at 16, but really you're better off grabbing an old PCI voodoo3 out of the closet. I'm going to sticky the frontpage of the hardware forum the day this thing works as a real graphics card...

Addendum to earlier post

Since Red Hat 8 did not recognize my video card (intel 845gl), I installed Mandrake 9.0 with the hope that things would get better. Unfortunately, Mandrake shows exactly the same problem as Red Hat. I now get a "no screens found" error when I try starting X. Just hoping that Intel does something fast...

You can get this working reasonably, under any distro, by just running it in "vesa" mode, check the intel page and they have a walkthrough for how to edit up your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

Intel 845GL worked !!

I finally solved the problem of Linux not supporting my Intel 845GL card. I tried using the "vesa" option as suggested by intel, but without significant improvement in performance. Also, my Dell computer does not allow me to change the framebuffer size as indicated by Intel.

What I finally did was download the new binaries (4.2.99.4) from xfree86.org. They have support for the 845 card. I installed it, and it worked perfectly - I am now running in 1024x768 24bit mode ! But this package recommends a higher version kernel than the one Red Hat 8.0 comes with, so I installed Mandrake 9.0 instead, before installing the xfree86 drivers.
