Exclamation Intel 536ep winmodem.. FORGET IT.

this is my story and first post on a linux box.

i purchased a "win modem" a computer show for the intent of using it in my linux box, (mistake 1)
i installed it and went throught a RH hardware config . all is well in the land of OZ. or so i thought.

with the help from this board and lot of research on the net; i downloaded 3 intel files from the intel site that were drivers / pakages for this modem (mistake2) . one file was a RPM
after about 5 hours i finally figured out how to "untar" the drivers .
I then proceeded to install the RPM one 1st. NO dice could not get it to install .
so i figured that i will install the INTEL536ep-460.al.tgz ( this file is a catch all) {mistake 3}
got the file to install but the modem still did not work . ok 3 books later (and 1 weeks worth of more research) still the moden will not work.

called a friend that is RH certified. 3 hours of looking and updating the kernel at his place got the modem working (sort of) we had to do a little PEARL programing and some kernel instruction to remove the catch all file and install the INTEL 536ep-460-rh9.tgz file (this is the correct file to use if you are running RH8 or 9) yippee the modem works .. sort of.
will another week of tinkering the best speed i can get out the win modem is about 5 kb/sec and not to mention i would lose the connection within minutes after connecting to the host.
i was getting resolving host issuse all the time . another issue was the fact that i could not get on the net unless i was log on the system as root ..

the bottom line with this win modem is it just will not or can't work properly in liunx. the files from intel was written in c or c++ and while using emacs we were getting DOS flag at the bottom of the program box. this leads me to believe that the source code is flawed some how

my suggestion to any one with limited linux skills (like me ) do not use this win modem ;save it for a rainy day when your win box fries a modem.

i broke down and purchased a serial / hardware / external modem . paid about $28.00 usd when all was said and done. ( got it off ebay)
it took me about a 5 minutes to hook up all the cords
and another 10 to set all the commands in the KPPP box.
i bought a BEST DATA smart on modem ; model #'s 56spx-2 / 56sx-2 / 56spsx-2-mac / 56x-2-mac.

happy surfing ..

The DOS flag at the bottom of the program box probably just means the source code has dos style line endings, rather than unix style ones (CRLF as opposed to just CR).

komakino.. thanks for point it out .. he thought the same thing when he looked at the flag..

the problem was still in the way the script was written. he feels that dos flag was a clue to the problem ..

Andrakos mate,

The easiest option for me was to get a hardware modem because almost all pci modems are winmodems and I just didn't want the hassle.

In the end I went for a NEW D-link DFM-560E 56K v.90 External Data/Fax/Voice Modem (Serial) that I found on EBAY for 30 bucks..

Problem solved

*nodnod* Thanks for the info...I still hold out hope for a fully functional PCI modem under linux *sighs wistfully*

Anywho...I'll attempt this solution...the other problem I had with it was the modem didn't hang up properly (no dial tone), but remove the cord from the modem to wall and replace and it fixxed the problem...ah well

Thanks Again Stixs

YAY!, I'm at home now and online with my new Creative Labs Modem Blaster that I too bought off ebay...nummy...

Looks like, if it's a PCI modem and you wanna run linux, it's probably not compatable without a lot of work

Stixs Many many thanks

I have used a U.S.Robotics USR V.92 Performance Pro Modem (PCI) very successfuly with Linux. It has a hardware UART and Linux recognizes it instantly.

I've gone through the same modem headaches as everyone else. There are ways to make winmodems work, but my experience is even once you get them going under linux, they perform very poorly. USR makes good quality hardware PCI modems that work with linux but they are usually a little pricey. It's easier and cheaper to just get a no-name generic external serial modem and be done with the hassle. I bought a best-date external for about $39 last year and it works with everything. just my .02cents.
