Intel 536ep modem not connecting to net

I'm a total newbie and I need help. I have Suse 9.0 and my Intel 536ep modem doesn't connect. It does dial out, but when I check the logs it says NO CARRIER and keeps trying to redial. I tried researching this but can't seem to find an answer. Please help.

first check to make sure th init strings its getting are correct.

Then make sure your ISP is actually operating.
They may have the modem banks down for a few hours for upgrades etc, etc.

1 easy thing to do is since you are getting a NO CARRIER error,
dial out to your ISP, having a regular telephone beside you , after it dials, pick up the phone and listen for a sequence. Ring to ISP, Pickup, Modem-talk, and finnally a handshake static sound.

No carrier usually means no dialtone, or the remote modems are NOT completeing the handshake.

(stupid but, Ive heard worse) Check to make absolutely sure you do have a dial tone on the wire you are using.

This is just the first things you should do.
I will guess the remote modem is not completing a connection, and that you should modify your init string to the modem to use Auto Modulation/speed settings and to also use the same protocol as the remote modems use, X2, 56kflex, V90 , V92 etc tec.

Thanks. The modem does connect in XP. I've found a couple of different init strings online, but they didn't work. Intel's site recommended I contact my ISP for the strings. I'm waiting for their reply. Thanks again.

I think my problem is the modem itself. I've been having problems with it in Windows as well as in Linux.

not trying to dialing

I Suse 9.1 and the same intel modem. All drivers are installed, but the modem does not even try to dial. Here's the dumb part... I tried like 12 different modems and they all do the same thing. Some were immediately found by suse, others I had to compile drivers. None of them work. Any suggestions? This modem works fine in Windows XP Pro and the phone line tests fine.

I click the dialin and it does nothing. I am using KDE 3.2 and the kinternet button to dialin.

I had the same problem with 536EP and suse 9.0....

solution from official site:
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/1...nocarrier.html

Error Message 'No Carrier' with the Winmodem Driver Intel-536ep

Applies to: SUSE LINUX 9.0

Symptom
Even though all entered data for the dial-up are correct, your
attempts to establish an Internet connection with your internal modem
via an Internet provider fail with the error message:

No Carrier

Cause
During the installation of SUSE LINUX 9.0, the new kernel parameter
"desktop" has been set as the boot option in the boot loader
configuration. This parameter modifies the standard settings of the
time slices (see the article Balancing Interactivity with SuSE Linux
9.0).

The proprietary close source driver used for your modem cannot work
properly with this particular setting.

Solution
Remove this kernel parameter from the boot loader configuration. To do
this, proceed as follows:

1. Start YaST and select the menu entries:
* System
* Boot Loader Configuration
2. Select the line "Available Sections" from the column "Option"
and press the button "Edit".
3. Select the entry "Linux" from the column "Label" and press the
button "Edit". (In case you changed the label manually during or
after the installation, select the name you assigned to the SUSE
Linux 9.0 installation.)
4. Select the entry "kernel" from the column "Option" and press the
button "Edit".
5. Enlarge the new dialog for a better overview.
6. Search for the word "desktop" in the prompt and remove it.
7. Confirm by clicking "OK" in the three successive dialogs and
exit the boot loader configuration with the button "Finish".
8. Quit YaST.
9. Restart your system and try anew to establish a dial-up
connection with your provider.

hope this help you....

Apparantly, you need this (props to _______ for getting me this far, and to my pal, who is probably sick of me pestering him over this, by now, but is still trying to help, bless him).

Now, i'm trying to configure 9.1, and i've downloaded the .zip file of that, and i think i have to burn it as an ISO, and boot up *nix, but nthen what?

C'mon, aren't there any power users who can help us out here?

If i get the answer before it's posted here, i'll post it. It shouldn't have to be this hard to escape M$ hell .

*edit again:
Quote:
so basically, i have all i need except the ISO on CD, but that's nothing to do, i can handle that
my pal says:
yeah.
my pal says:
or a thumb drive, floppy, whatever.. [snip], an external hard drive is fine too
