Installing Xubuntu on IBM 300PL. Won't write to hard drive

I'm trying to install Xubuntu 7.0.4 on an IBM 300PL (500Mhz PIII). The installation gets to the partitioning step. It correctly displays the disk size. I select default partitioning. Installation then hangs the computer after starting to copy files to disk. I have experience installing various Linux distro's on other computers. Never ran into this. Freespire will run on this computer. PCLinuxOS also fails to install. I don't recall exactly what happens but I believe it also fails to write anything to hard drive. Any ideas? Thanks!

Are you able to install plain regular Debian on this machine?
