I just downloaded ubuntu, this is my first time usin linux so im kinda lost, im tryin to install my ati driver, but im having no luck, i downloaded the driver, went to install it, i get this message
Could not open the file /home/kc/Desktop/ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run.
gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.
I tryed running it through the terminal too, and i getthe same thing. Please Help.
Ok i tried it without the space and nothin seems to be hapening.
Also i took a look at the first link you gave me and was going through the steps for that one, then i ran into this step typed it in and i get this
kc@gamer:~$ bash ./ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/edgy

Alright i tried it like this and it started to uncompress it but it stops heres the message

Ok i tried it without the space and nothin seems to be hapening.
If it works as expected it will not give any message. It'll only tell you if something is going wrong.
for './some_executable' to work 'some_executable' must be in the directory you're working in. '.' is the directory you're in. For instance, "cd ." will 'change' to the directory you're already in (can't think of a more useful example now ).
I do not have any experience installing an ATI card nor am I running Ubuntu, so I sure hope somebody with both these things will jump in and rescue you.. Good luck!
