Question Installing on 64-bit system

Hi folks.

I have just got my new pc with AMD64 cpu, SATA disk.
While trying to install mandrake 10.1 the installation hangs when it tries to install drivers, before the main install. I did not even get to partitioning my disk.

I thought I could install both 32-bit and 64-bit OS on AMD64... am I wrong?

Anyone who can help?

First of all, please post what hardware you have including manufacturer, model numbers and chipsets if you know them.

Was any O/S on this system prior to your install attempt with say Linux that had a GRUB mbr?

What happens if you boot up with DOS and the drivers for CD and SATA? Can you see the disks with fdisk?

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz

Is there any reason why I am not able to install Mandrake 10.1 on this one?

I think there was a post on the nvidia unofficial linux forums about the exact combo of AMD64, nforce4, SATA and possibly GeForce6. Basically I think you'll wanna try a normal ATA drive first, then install your mobo drivers and use the SATA drive. Maybe things have improved already, but maybe you'll have to wait til 10.2 or a newer kernel before it works seamlessly first time.
