Well, yes, it'll make your desktop close, but you can always restart it again. From a console, as root, type 'telinit 3' or 'init 3'. This will take you to a console login screen. When you're done doing what the driver install wants, just type 'telinit 5' or 'init 5', as root, and it'll start X back up. This is going through the runlevels... type man init for more info. Usually runlevel 5 is the only one with an X server. Runlevel 0 is shutdown/halt, runlevel 6 is reboot.
