installing nvidia geforce driver

I start to install the driver and it tells me that I need to exit the X server.... how do I do this? Won't that make my desktop crash?

Press CTRL + ALT + F1, this will kick you into a command line,
(CTRL + ALT + F7 switches back btw).

Login as a user.
su into root.
Type the command "init 4"
Followed by "killall X", that will close X for you.

After installing the driver (sh NVIDIA<blah>) and editing the XF86Config-4 (nv to nvidia),
Simply "init 5" to get back into a regular runtime.

You might wanna use "X" (capital) to start X back up.

Well, yes, it'll make your desktop close, but you can always restart it again. From a console, as root, type 'telinit 3' or 'init 3'. This will take you to a console login screen. When you're done doing what the driver install wants, just type 'telinit 5' or 'init 5', as root, and it'll start X back up. This is going through the runlevels... type man init for more info. Usually runlevel 5 is the only one with an X server. Runlevel 0 is shutdown/halt, runlevel 6 is reboot.
