Installing latest nVidia drivers in Mandrake 10. rivafb error?
Hi, I hope this isn't too much of a noob question:
I searched around in google and couldn't find a solution for it. I am running Mandrake 10 (Community) with the kernel that came with it (2.6.3 I believe). I am trying to install the latest nVidia drivers in it, and I do get them to install and even get to a desktop with them (with the nVidia screen showing at the start). However, I get a heck of a lot of crashes, most of them by unknown as soon as I start. Then, after X is running, everytime I close a program it crashes module unknown. I also get a flurry of crashes on shutdown. The only thing that happens during the install of the drivers is it tells me that rivafb is installed into my kernel and the drivers won't work properly. If I uninstall the drivers everything works fine. My question is what is rivafb, and how can I disable it so I can install and use my nVidia drivers? EDIT: I guess I should say that I have an FX 5200. Thanks. I also have a second question. I have a Radeon 7000 PCI installed in my system that I would like to use a second monitor on, what is the best way to get that up and running. I found instructions for setting up dual head cards, but nothing for an nVidia / Radeon combo to get it running. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much! |
This isn't so much help as a bump, but welcome to LQ and hopefully somebody can help you out soon.
The rivafb thing is just a generic warning, I believe. I got the same message. Try 'lsmod' and if you had it, I'd think it would show, but you probably don't. 'rmmod' would be what you wanted if you did. You could check that out anyway and see if anything else looks wrong. Maybe post the output of 'lsmod' here and someone could see something amiss. Also check out /var/log/X*.log and see if its (WW) or (EE) has anything interesting. No idea about the dual-head, sorry. There's an article on that at the LQWiki that might help. |
I got around this by recompiling my kernel and removing all frame buffer support.

Hi, thanks for the help. I'm still going to ask some n00b questions, please bear with me:
I tried running "lsmod" from the command line and got a invalid bash command, I also tried the "Run Command" item from the K menu, and still nothing came up. Also, I will learn to compile the kernel myself, but how would you go about removing framebuffer support? Is that something you can use a switch on, or is it more along the lines that it will be in the readme file of the kernel source? Thanks for the help! |
Welcome to LQ. You will need to be running as root in order to run lsmod. I wish I could offer some help on the nvidia drivers but that's not something I'm overly familiar with. Good luck with the project -- J.W.
