Installing Hard Drive 3TB

I am currently running Ubuntu for my Samba Server and I have three hard drives in it now and I'm looking to add a 4th. Thew new hard drive I am trying to add is a Seagate 3TB hard drive. When I try to create a partition using fdisk, it only will allow a max of a 2TB partition to be created.

The first drive is a 300 GB drive, which I have my operating system on. The other two are 2TB drives I use for storage.

Can someone please let me know how to create a partition for a 3TB drive?

Thanks,

Nick

fdisk is only aware of the MBR partition table format. Unfortunately, MBR has a whole-disk size limit of 2TB. To use this entire disk, you need to use a different partition table format (such as GPT).

Parted (and its graphical counterpart GParted) is capable of creating a GPT. I'd recommend that you use parted to partition this disk with a GPT.

One note is that Windows versions prior to 8 (I'm not sure about Windows 8) cannot boot off of GPT-formatted disks -- it doesn't sound like this will be a problem for you, though.

I hope this helps.

Create the partition using gdisk, then use the mkfs.ext4 command from the e2fsprogs package to format it.
