Installing GRUB on ICH9R chipset (fake RAID)

Hi folks!
I have some problem's installing GRUB for a dualboot on the ICH9R chipset, which requires a software RAID.
I installed Debian Squeeze by following this Tutorial and asked for help to install GRUB on this Forum but they can't help me anymore
The command "grub" (which is explained on the Tutorial) don't exist on my Boot-CD, and the command "grub-installer" answers:
Code:
~ # grub-installer /dev/mapper/isw_cdahffgdce_Volume0
Wrong number of args: mapdevfs <path>

hi

I do not use raid but why not fix the easy error first? Download a live cd that has grub on it?

suggests vary depending on whether you can only afford a small iso due to ISP costs up to dvd iso size.

knoppix has older editions that are cd size and newer ones are dvd size.

RIPLinux is about 90 megs

Thanks for your response.

I've already tried it with Kubuntu Gutsy, but it seems it doesn't support software-RAID; i started it with the corresponding boot-parameters, but /dev/mapper/ is empty after boot. Let's check with Knoppix!

I don't know any ISP who has got an offer without flat-rate...

hi

well if you must use raid....maybe you can google for a better howto than this?
http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/l...ly/008898.html

ps I am not a fan of raid....one it means ppl buy more drives than they should and that is a climate change crime.....
two) they often buy the 2 exactly the same....so if one is a lemon....
three) I back up to a 2 set dvdrw...but my distro needs only about 3g of data space

Might be that because the raid is "soft", linux sees it as two drives instead of an array. My SIL raid is like that.

Are you saying that grub wasn't installed as part of the process of installing Debian? That's, well, very surprising, but may be related to the fact that you're using software raid (dmraid). I installed to a dmraid once with Etch, and while it was intimidating, it was doable; and that was before dmraid was supported by the installer.

I'm not an expert by any means, but could you boot from the Boot-CD again and give me the result of the following:
Code:
ls /dev/mapper
I just want to see what the actual contents are in the driver directory. There's just something about "isw_cdahffgdce_Volume0" that doesn't quite look right to me, but I don't use an LVM so maybe it's right.

Also, what happens now when you try to boot? Do you get a grub screen, or just a blinking cursor in the top left corner?
