Installing dvd-rom on old laptop

Hi,
I have one old laptop (Toshiba Satellite S1730CDT).
It comes with one cd-rom. I want to replace it with one dvd-rom.
Are all slim dvd-roms on laptops comportable with it? \
I mean it's like desktop machine where yu can install whatever you want (as long as it is ATA).
Thank you.

Yes pretty much so............

But be warned, the new drive will not come with any hardware to physically attach to the laptop. You will need to remove the hardware adapter from the old drive.

In some cases the new drive may be recognized in the BIOS as a different device (hdd instead of hdc for example). In a few (very rare) cases the new drive may not be recognized by the BIOS at all.
