I have recently created a website that I have added a way to install the newer ATI cards into Ubuntu 10.04. Here is the website for more information. Just to let you know it is a lot easier than most people are making it out to be.

Yes...you download the installer program from ATI, and execute it. Doesn't get alot simpler than that.

Yeah but a lot of other people are making the process so complicated because AMDs website drivers do not work so they are going into the Xorg file and modifying it. Just use the drivers inside of Ubuntu.

Sorry, the ATI drivers work fine. But glad you found something that worked for you.

Kind of. What type of card do you have? Because I have the HD5850 and it does not work at all.

I've used about seven different cards, and all have worked fine.

Okay well I might try it again when I am building another computer. This configuration works beautifully for me and I do not want to screw it up. Thank you for the info. though!

Drivers from Ubuntu (10.04)=no.

Looks similsr to my unsolved issue... Same result using synaptic.

hey guys can anyone help me i am completely new to Ubuntu and i have a radeon 9600xt card and have no idea on how to install the drivers for it could someone help me with a step by step guide please ... thanks

First, please open your own thread, for your own question. Don't tack it on to someone elses old thread.

And if you want an installation guide, and the drivers, go to the ATI website, and download them. Did you look there?? It comes with an installer, and 'step-by-step' directions.

The only drivers that will work with your card in Ubuntu 10.04 are the open source ones that come with Ubuntu by default.

Ati's 9-3 driver set for the legacy chips currently does not support xorg7.5 so the binaries wont support or work in 7.5. I myself cannot use the open source drivers for my x1200 (rs600) because I cant get composting to work in gnome. The simple answer is please check the ati website for your model and hope you aren't on the legacy list (last supported version of xorg is 7.4) If you experience trouble with the Open sourced radeon drivers fill out a bug report and use the mesa driver. use synaptic to do so by removing the radeon packages and marking mesa for reinstall.
If you've got got a currently supported piece of hardware, there are multiple driver sets you can try (if you look for them). Its a pain but there really isn't anything you can do but hope for a bug fix or plead and lobby with ati for support.
Also please check the ati website for instructions on installations.

It seems futile to hope something moved from a 'legacy' section will be replaced back into the main driver release. Plus the R300 GPUs (Radeon 9550-9800) were out in 2002. It's been 8 years. Perhaps it would make sense to spend $40-60 for a Radeon HD 5450-5570 that is supported and will be supported for a longer while. If you'd rather not spend money, you could always downgrade to a version of Ubuntu using that version of xorg.

I have ubuntu 10.04 dual booted with Windows
Some time back installed ati radeon hd 4650 agp card.Installed fglrx from system-hardware drivers.Is not getting installed.Downloaded ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run from AMD Site.It detects i686 and xorg 7.5 unpacks and stops Manually installing deb also not getting installed.Googled the same and found no solution I am not well versed in this sort of thing and request some guidance
