Installing a Linux Distro on a Playstaion 2 not 3

I'm perfectly aware that Sony sold a Linux kit for the playstation 2 a few years ago. I would LOVE to have this kit but cannot find it anywhere! So I'm asking is there any version of Linux (a modern kernel preferably) that will still run on the playstation 2 all I can find here are PS3 threads ... I will eventually get ubuntu on a PS3 but I don't feel like shelling out the dough just for that. I've got two playstations at this point a slim one which I know won't run Linux due to lack of drive bay ... but my best friend just bought me a full size PS2 for Christmas as he knows I always wanted to put Linux on the thing. The playstation Linux web site is good but there doesn't seem to be anything new there ... I would love any and all info ... fill this thread up with tips, tricks links, any and everything! I'm ready! Thanks peeps!

For years, the only way to load the Linux kernel on the PS2 hardware was with the memory-card based Linux bootloader which was installed with the official Sony kit.

I know a few years ago somebody put out a homebrew loader that was supposed to be able to successfully boot the kernel. Of course, you need a homebrew-capable PS2. There are many ways to do this (which are outside the scope of this forum), but the best way if you just want Linux would be to install the Independence Memory Card exploit.

Unfortunately, there is currently no port of 2.6.x to the PS2. I believe the latest is 2.4.17. This is unlikely to change, as in general interest in Linux on the PS2 isn't great.

eBay is your only option, but last time I checked they were going for over $200.
