Installing a brother colour laser printer
 

Hi there linux users
I am very new to the linux family and am generally finding my way through the mist, I was hoping that someone would be able to help me instal a brother 4040cn colour laser printer to my laptop, the laptop is connected wireless to a router and that is connected to the printer via a network wired connection. I have downloaded the linux drivers from the brother site but cannot fathom how to install the printer.

The first thing you need is Cups installed. What distro? Cups should be in the repos for most distros.

Once installed, and with cups running, open a web browser, and in the URL bar type http://localhost:631

That will connect you to the interface. Log in as root. Follow the prompts to add a printer.

I have a B/W Brother printer. Brother's site will have install instructions for the driver. Install it first, then add the printer.

Post how far you get, with as much information as possible; if you need more help.

i have got to the URL you gave but do not know what to enter in the various locations

Cups stands for 'Common Unix Printing System'. In short, this software provides what most printers need to print. It is the recommended 'printing system' common to most linux and unix systems. It allows the management of printing.

Distro, it a short form of distribution. ie Ubuntu is a distro, as is Red Hat. I asked what distro ( distribution ) just so I had some idea if there is a package manager you can use to install Cups.

The URL I provided will not work until you install Cups. Once Cups is installed, and running, port 631 will be opened on your TCP/IP stack. That will allow you to connect to Cups, install your printer, manage it etc.

It is the documentation for Cups. I'm not suggesting you read it, it will probably give you information overload. It is a reference, if and when you need more information on Cups.

Don't know what I am doing wrong but I have done everything that has been suggested and cannot yet print. The printer can either be connected via a network lead or usb I want to use the former. When trying to print I am told that the printer is not enabled although I go through the procedure it will still not enable

Note there is are different step if this is a network printer or USB.

Have you tried to ping the printer IP address?
