Installation problems SDLT RedHat 2.1 AS
Hi there, I'm trying to install an Compaq SDLT110/220 drive on my Proliant server. It's attached to an HP Build LSILogic (53C1030) SCSI controller (HP Storageworks 64bit Dual Channel Wide Ultra3 SCSI).
I'm running RedHat AS 2.1 with kernel 2.4.9-e.3smp (I have 4 Xeon processors) The server seems to recognize the controller (first time KUDZU installed it). Beside the LSILogic controller I have two Compaq Smart Array 4250ES (one is the failover). As I look in my modules.conf file everyting seems to be alright: #/etc/module.conf alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias scsi_hostadapter cpqarray alias eth0 e1000 alias scsi_hostadapter1 mptscsih alias scsi_hostadapter2 mptscsih But that's as far as it goes. I did the 'modprobe st', but when I try to get the status of the st0 device (mt -f /dev/st0 status) I get the message: /dev/st0: No such device My /proc/scsi/scsi file is empty Here's the output from lsmod: Module Size Used by Tainted: P st 30548 0 (autoclean) (unused) autofs 13796 0 (autoclean) (unused) e1000 52740 1 ext3 73536 10 jbd 55048 10 [ext3] cpqarray 23904 11 sd_mod 13468 0 (unused) scsi_mod 124988 2 [st sd_mod] I've been looking all over the internet to find a solution but none came up. I read something about my lilo.conf adding an the append statement, but I have no idea which values I should use. Is there anyone who can help me? Thanx in advance! Arjan |
"/dev/st0: No such device"
It is possible that your hard drive is on /dev/scd0 or /dev/sda. ___________________________________ Be prepared. Create a LifeBoat CD. http://users.rcn.com/srstites/LifeBo...home.page.html Steve Stites |
That is odd that proc/scsi/scsi displays nothing but yet you boot the a scsi array. What is in
ls /proc/scsi; What is the output of dmesg; lspci -v; mount; |
Here's my output from /proc/scsi, dmesg, lspci and mount (it's quite a list)

modprobe sym53xc800;
Is the modules sym53xc800 loaded? What is the output of lsmod? |
No, the module sym53xc800 isn't loaded, I only have sym53c8xx.o. When I try to modprobe the module I get the following error messages:
# modprobe sym53c8xx /lib/modules/2.4.9-e.3smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c8xx.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters /lib/modules/2.4.9-e.3smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c8xx.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.9-e.3smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c8xx.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.9-e.3smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c8xx.o: insmod sym53c8xx failed Here's my output from lsmod: #lsmod Module Size Used by Tainted: P st 30548 0 (autoclean) (unused) autofs 13796 0 (autoclean) (unused) e1000 52740 1 ext3 73536 10 jbd 55048 10 [ext3] cpqarray 23904 11 sd_mod 13468 0 (unused) scsi_mod 124988 2 [st sd_mod] |
Try loading the fusion module
modprobe mptbase; |
I have installed the latest mptbase (and mptscsih) modules from LSILogic but I still can't access the tape device. The mptscsih module is in my /etc/modules.conf file, I've loaded the 'st' and fusion module with the modprobe command and I've also run the ./MAKEDEV st command.
Is it possible that I have to set some parameters somewhere so the system knows that my tape device isn't attached to my first SCSI controller (the 4250ES array controller) but to my LSILogic controller? |
By the way, this is the output from the lsmod after loading the 'st' and mptbase modules:
# lsmod Module Size Used by Tainted: P mptbase 44896 0 (unused) st 30548 0 (unused) autofs 13796 0 (autoclean) (unused) e1000 52740 1 ext3 73536 10 jbd 55048 10 [ext3] cpqarray 23904 11 sd_mod 13468 0 (unused) scsi_mod 124988 2 [st sd_mod] |
Hopefully right the scsi control is now loaded.
There should not be any drivers for the tape drive its just a plain SDLT right? What does ls /proc/scsi; ls -l /dev/st0; mt -f /dev/st0 status; report. I don't think you need to give any parameters. I never have. You could try rescaning the scsi bus after the fusion module is loaded. |
Yes, it's a plain SDLT, at leats, as far as I know. But it still doesn't work:
#ls -l /proc/scsi -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Dec 24 11:57 scsi #ls -l /dev/st0 crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 Dec 22 18:03 /dev/st0 #mt -f /dev/st0 status /dev/st0: No suche device A rescan of the scsi bus didn't work either, but I'm not shure on which bus the controller is, I know the scsi ID of the controller is 7, the SCSI of the tape is 6 and it's on the first channel I will be gone until december 28 celebrating christmas, so I won't be able to give any feedback until then. Suggestions are of course always welcome. Have a nice christmas! Greez, Arjan |
It's still not seeing the scsi card. I notice that the mptscsih module is not loaded. The card should report stuff in /proc/scsi/mptscsih.
I have the same chipset on a Dell Poweredger 2600. I am running Redhat 8.0 not AS 2.1, but I checked around there are no issues that I can find with this chipset on AS 2.1. Try modprobe mptscsih again. Here are extracts from lspci,lsmod and /proc/scsi. #lspci 09:0d.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 (rev 07) Subsystem: Dell Computer Corporation: Unknown device 0123 Flags: bus master, 66Mhz, medium devsel, latency 72, IRQ 72 I/O ports at cc00 [size=256] Memory at fd6f0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Memory at fd6e0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Expansion ROM at fd700000 [disabled] [size=1M] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [58] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable- 09:0d.1 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 (rev 07) Subsystem: Dell Computer Corporation: Unknown device 0123 Flags: bus master, 66Mhz, medium devsel, latency 72, IRQ 73 I/O ports at c800 [size=256] Memory at fd6d0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Memory at fd6c0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Expansion ROM at fd700000 [disabled] [size=1M] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [58] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable- #cat /proc/scsi/mptscsih/{0,1}; ioc0: LSI53C1030, FwRev=01013d00h, Ports=1, MaxQ=255, IRQ=72 ioc1: LSI53C1030, FwRev=01013d00h, Ports=1, MaxQ=255, IRQ=73 #lsmod; mptscsih 39984 8 mptbase 43680 3 [mptscsih] sd_mod 13484 18 scsi_mod 111704 6 [sr_mod sg st aic7xxx mptscsih sd_mod] |
Yes, it works! After loading de mptbase and mptscsih the tape drive was recognized.
Thanx!! One more (final?) question, how did you put the mptbase in your /etc/modules.conf? Or is there another way? I don't want to load the modules by hand everytime I've rebooted the server. I tried to put the mptbase module in the /etc/modules.conf but that didn't work: # cat modules.conf alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias scsi_hostadapter cpqarray alias eth0 e1000 alias scsi_hostadapter1 mptbase alias scsi_hostadapter2 mptscsih alias scsi_hostadapter3 mptscsih |
OK, I think I.ve got it. I added the line:
add above st mptbase mptscsih to my /etc/modules.conf After a reboot I still could see the tape device Thanx a lot for all the help you gave me and a happy 2004 to everyone Greez, Arjan |
