Install SuSE Linux 8.0 on HighPoint RAID 0
 

I've seen another thread about installing on a HPT372 controller for which drivers already exist but they don't for mine. I'm using a HPT374 controller on an ABIT AT7 and when I load the installation with YaST2 it doesn't even find the HDDs.
Do you think making the partitions first with Partition Magic under XP would help?
I'm a total newbie to Linux, I've never used it befrore and I just wanna learn it for my personal knowledge, this is why I'm totally lost. Even if I did have the drivers for the controller, how would I have to load the installation? I mean what command would I need for YaST2 to ask me a disk with the drivers?

You can download HPT374 drivers for versions of SuSE up to and including 8.0 from Highpoint's website: http://www.highpoint-tech.com

Word of warning: I eventually gave up trying to install SuSE on my AT7-MAX based system, because it kept locking up at random points of the install.. nothing wrong with the RAID drivers though, just some strange instability. Doesn't happen with SuSE 8.1, but Highpoint haven't released drivers for that version of SuSE.

Yeah I know but thx! These drivers came out not that long ago but well after I got my mainboard... so I couldn't use my RAID for ages... :(

Oh, what's your problem with it anyway? Does it not find it when you try to install Linux?

Read the procedures that come with the drivers for SuSE and RedHat, it might help. Basically with RH it asks you for the disk with the drivers during the installation process, where with SuSE you actually have to switch to another console in the installtion process to do an insmod so the installation "wizard" (don't like that name) finds your HDDs that are connected to your controller.

What's the version of your kernel, if it's the same I reckon the drivers will work with your distro...

I could get the installation working fine with SuSE 8.0 (uses the 2.4.18 kernel) and it could detect my hard drives, but there was some other instability that caused it to constantly crash...

That instability didn't appear to be present with SuSE 8.1, but as that uses the 2.4.19 kernel, the drivers I downloaded wouldn't work.. and of course I couldn't compile the open source to make a driver without having a platform to compile it on first, so that wouldn't work.

Still... I changed my mind after a while and decided to give Gentoo a try - I haven't installed yet, I'm just trying to work out how to build the drivers so that I can modprobe them.

Oh, sorry I can't really help you then, I'm just a beginner trying to learn it when I have a bit of time (which is not that often). But it's good you told me that coz I'm also having some troubles with SuSE 8.0 and was considering trying 8.1, but if the drivers are not out yet then I guess I can't do it... And I'm definitely not gonna try to make them myslef...
