install Pinnacle PCTV Sat CI with Kernel 2.6.3

Hi!

I'm running SuSE 9.0 Pro with a vanilla kernel (version 2.6.3) and want to install my Pinnacle PCTV Sat CI DVB card (appears to be a Twinhan DST clone).

All things that I need are compiled into the kernel except the DVB-drivers which are realized as modules.

I'm trying to load the drivers by:

modprobe videodev
modprobe bttv card=0x71 i2c_hw=1
modprobe dvb-core
modprobe dst dst_type=0
modprobe dvb-bt8xx

dmesg gives me:

Linux video capture interface: v1.00
bttv: driver version 0.9.12 loaded
bttv: using 8 buffers with 2080k (520 pages) each for capture
bttv: Bt8xx card found (0).
bttv0: Bt878 (rev 17) at 0000:02:0a.0, irq: 22, latency: 64, mmio: 0xf7efe000
bttv0: detected: Pinnacle PCTV SAT CI [card=113], PCI subsystem ID is 11bd:0026
bttv0: using: Twinhan DST + clones [card=113,insmod option]
bttv0: gpio: en=00000000, out=00000000 in=00f500fd [init]
bttv0: using tuner=4
bttv0: add subdevice "dvb0"
bt878: AUDIO driver version 0.0.0 loaded
dvb_bt8xx: unable to determine DMA core of card 0
attach: checking "bt878 #0 [hw]"
find by pci: checking "bt878 #0 [hw]"

lsmod shows:

Module Size Used by
dvb_bt8xx 6020 0
dst 13964 0
bt878 9280 2 dvb_bt8xx,dst
dvb_core 54548 2 dvb_bt8xx,dst
bttv 144492 2 dvb_bt8xx,bt878

v4l2_common 5248 1 bttv
btcx_risc 4232 1 bttv
videodev 7552 1 bttv
ppp_deflate 5120 0
zlib_deflate 21784 1 ppp_deflate
bsd_comp 5760 0
ppp_async 10496 1
tuner 17548 0
i2c_core 19460 4 dvb_bt8xx,bttv,i2c_algo_bit,tuner
parport_pc 29120 1
lp 8868 0
parport 22752 2 parport_pc,lp
md5 3840 1
ipv6 236992 10

All seems to be correct to me, but when I try to execute xine:
xine stdin://mpeg2 < /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0
bash: /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0: No such device

What mistake(s) have I made?

Thanks for your help.

Michael

EDIT:
It seems that my problem is the following error:
dvb_bt8xx: unable to determine DMA core of card 0

The module dvb_bt8xx does not load correctly and prevents my
DST frontend from being loaded

Does anybody know what causes this error?
-->dvb_bt8xx: unable to determine DMA core of card 0

Thanks again.

Hi!

I think my kernel was not properly configured. (because I did it myself ) Later I used a kernel that shipped with my distribution (suse 9.1) and now everything works fine. Perhaps you should try to move your card into another pci slot. Maybe that helps...
Unfortunately I don't know what was wrong in my kernel configuration. Sorry...

hi..

I have a suse 9.2 and I'd like to add a satelite receiver card.
From your posts seems that Pinnacle pctv sat works with suse 9...
Is that true?

Hi!
The Pinnacle PCTVSat and Pinnacle PCTVSat CI should work out of the box with Suse 9.2. Although the PCTVSat has some weird problems with the kernel that came with the distribution, a kernel update through YOU (Yast Online Update) should correct that problem.
Or try Suse 9.3 which can now be downloaded for free. There are no such kernel problems.
