Inspiron 8100 won't boot...

I am fixing a dell inspiron 8100 for a friend who wanted me to load winsuck. I tried but two separate xp OSes frose during the same part of the setup (loading divices). So of course I loaded a real OS; slack. It installed perfectly, but it won't boot. I installed LILO, and when that didn't work, I tried MBR. Boot disks, like the Ultimate Boot CD, won't show any linux partition. Thanks for any imput on what is causing this booting problem.
