initializing the modem

my problem is that I got struck with the "Initializing the modem " thing.the modem keeps on waiting at that phase.I am using Fedora Core 2 with 2.6 kernel.And got the proper driver installed.If i query the modem it results in checking "AT1..AT2..AT3..AT4..AT5..AT6..AT7...AT8..AT9..AT10.." AND shows the empty textfields of the the corresponding ATs shown above.Pleeeeez any help me and I wanted to do RHCE in the upcoming month.So I am in hungry of Linux vs Internet .

i downloaded the modem driver for kernel 2.6(mine is kernel 2.6 with fedora core2 on it).From the site

and did "make install" and hsfconfig.But.........
I am unable to connect to Internet even my connection to the net is active.i.e... i see 'bytes in,bytes out,packets sent,packet recieved 'but i am unable to connect to any webiste...why is that so?????
