[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi I am relatively new to Linux . I m using Ubuntu 8.10. I have a sony vaio laptop ( vgn-cr120e ) . I wanted to increase my ram from 2gb to 3 or 4 gb . Now I have a 32bit Ubuntu installed but Laptop supports 64bit proccessing.

I wanted advice on this issue or any articles on similar topics. Also I have few quesiton will I be able to run 32 bit applications on 64 bit OS.
Are there any known bugs ? I ask this because I am use linux for web development . Any suggestions will be helpful .

Thanks in advance .....

You sure can upgrade to 64 bit if you go to 4 GB. And you can run 32 bit applications on 64bit OS's, but its rare that you would need to.

I'm not sure what the relevance of 64bit to web development is. It shouldn't make any difference.

I didn't even notice the difference when I switched to 64 bit.

A question

The question I would ask is whether the system will in fact make use of that 4GB of RAM. Is your graphics chip when performing borrowing a lot of your RAM? You might run the command vmstat or free or free -m. See the man pages for more info.
