improving 3d performance

Hi

I had just finished installing new 2.6.5 kernel and ATI driver on my radeon9700Pro.
Needless to say that the card is very fast in windows. But UT2K4 felt more like its running on Radeon7200 when i tried to run the game on my linux.
I understand that ATI drivers are not the best for linux right now, but are they that bad?
Or should i not blame it all on drivers only.

Are there any settings (like kernel options in menuconfig) that may improve 3d performance that i might not be aware of?

I run RH9 with the modified kernel.
Mobo is nForce chipset, 2Ghz athlon cpu

Thanks
Alex
