I need some help with my ATI driver installation, already tried a few methods.
I have already searched through the already answered questions, tried two or three different methods of getting the drivers installed and they didn't work for me. I think the problem is me in the fglrxconfig. I don't know what to enable and what not, so when I reboot, the XF86Config file that fglrxconfig created has something wrong in it, so X won't start. Luckily I had my previous config file backed up, and restored it, booting back into X. I was just wondering if anyone can personally volunteer some time to help me getting this to work. I haven't been with Linux very long, and only know so much. Thanks to anyone that offers any help
I'm running Debian with the 2.4.27-2-386 kernel. My video card is a Radeon9550.
Did you use the right version? Debian according to the website, comes with Xfree86 4.3, which means you need the 4.3 drivers for the fglrx config.
What exactly happens when you run them? Every single optino for me was acceptable at the default (the [____]) next to the questions. Try using every one at default, then reboot, let us know what happens and what errors you recieve.
First, I tried that ATI Driver Installer, and ran fglrxconfig after that. That didn't work, so I made this thread and when I saw your reply, I downloaded the 4.3 drivers, converted them to .deb with alien, and dpkg -x'ed them to a folder in my home directory that I just named "fglrx". I found fglrxconfig in fglrx/usr/X11R6/bin. I ran that, and selected all defaults. Rebooted, and X would not start, tells me that it might be that it is configured wrong (duh!). So I restored my original XF86Config-4 file to /etc/X11 and rebooted back to X. What am I doing wrong in this procedure? Could anyone maybe just give me a step by step?
The only thing I can think to tell you, is try it again. Do the ATI Driver install as per the instructions on their website. This will mean Downloading the Driver, and the correct fglrx. You will need to install the fglrx first, Then check for POSIX memory, kernel source, etc...Then your run the drivers in the command prompt, see the happy penguin and do the install. Then you config by running fglrx in the command prompt. Once complete, reboot. If you get the x won't start, check the XOrg.0.log in var/logs to see why. If you can find out why, you should be able to fix it by modifying the XOrg.conf manually to fix the error you should see in the log Don't just hit an error and quit, you need to try and figure out WHY you got the error.
