I'm not sure what you mean, "how you got on"? If your referring to the ./smarturpmi.sh command, it took a while to get them all. I want to ask what that did........ :-) ..... but I won't. I saved the entire output in case you were interested in the changes it made. I can post it, if ever you need to see it.

Here's the output through konsole of urpmi dkms-fglrx fglrx:

[root@localhost alan]# urpmi dkms-fglrx fglrx
No package named fglrx
The following packages contain fglrx: dkms-fglrx, fglrx-control-center, fglrx-devel, fglrx-kernel-2.6.27-desktop-0.rc7.5.1mnb, ...
You should use "-a" to use all of them
[root@localhost alan]#

Did you mean to type urpmi dkms-fglrx instead? I will halt until I recieve further instructions from you.

Sorry the info i read seems to be inacurrate.

If you can log in to your desktop do: Alt & F2 then type : mcc then click run.

Enter your root password to continue.

Go to Install & Remove Software in the search box type: fglrx.

When the list appears select: dkms-fglrx (if fglrx-control-centre is not selected along with dkms-fglrx select it) and click apply.

If it offers a proprietary driver accept it.

This will auto-select anything else required to successfully install the driver.

If all is completed successfully test your install at the commandline with: glxinfo

Look for an output near the top similar to this:

name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string:
<-- It should have ati here
server glx version string: 1.4

Those two packages already have a check mark in them.

glxinfo at the konsole yields these results:

The driver appears to be installed, although it doesn't seem to be the proprietary version. Follow the instructions below to try and install the propriertary version.

Run: Configure your computer or do Alt & F2 type: mcc, click run and enter root password to continue.

Go to Hardware--> Setup graphical server

Click on Graphic Card go to the ATI section and choose Radeon 9500 to Radeon X1050 then click ok.

Hopefully you will be offered the chance to install the proprietary driver.

I was offered the installation of the proprietary driver. I accepted the driver and opted for defaults afterwards (no translucency).

Keep the changes?
The current configuration is:

3D hardware acceleration: yes
Keyboard layout: us
Mouse type: ExplorerPS/2
Monitor: MX70
Monitor HorizSync: 30.0 - 70.0
Monitor VertRefresh: 47.0 - 120.0
Graphics card: ATI Technologies Inc ATI Radeon 9500 to Radeon X1050
Color depth: 16 million colors (24 bits)
Resolution: 1024x768 24bpp
Xorg driver: fglrx

I clicked on yes. Then logged out and back in again as prompted.

This should be working now. A few more checks to confirm certain lines/components are present.

Do: less /etc/X11/xorg.conf and look this section and check if your card is identified. You can use the up & down arrows to scroll throught the list. Hit the Q button to exit.

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName "ATI Rage 128-based cards"
Driver "r128"
Option "DPMS"

If not post what is shown here.

Do the following and post the results:

rpm -qa |grep fglrx

rpm -qa |grep ati

rpm -qa |grep kernel

dkms status (this one needs to be done as root)

Was this a clean install of Mandriva 2009? I ask this because i see some 2008.1 packages installed. There shouldn't be any 2008.1 packages listed at all.

I need to get some rest now. I'll check back with the thread first thing in the morning and take care of anything you recommend. Thank you for sticking with me on this!!! Your help is much appreciated.

In my opinion, you would be better served to:

a) Backup any personal data.

b) Download either the Mandriva One 2009 (it's about 750mb) or the Mandriva 2009 Free (that's a dvd)

c) You use which ever one you downloaded and reintsall your system from scratch.

Let's start with a clean slate.
