Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

I have some questions about video cards..

Hello first off this is what happen I'm installing gentoo I get most of it configured i got kde done and got X working ok..

It looked good no problems then I reboot well i tell ya that was not the best thing to do i guess..

At boot computer starts great but screen does not i hear the hhd start and all the lights come on..
But from the start of the computer i get nothing on my monitor..Just No Signal..
No Bios nothing ok so what did i do i say hmm well i hook my vga line up to it works just fine (have not tried gentoo yet i have duel boot with FC5)..

I guess my real question is can X do stuff to my video card like to the firmware?

I have a evga 7300 gs my monitor is a ViewSonic VA2012wb....

Ok now this has happened to me before my ok linux box did the some thing when i got it all set up.
I was installing I think Mandriva well it was something other than gentoo.
I edited the screen size and rebooted and dead card did not work on any computer tried 2 to others.
But this video card the vga port stopped working i have not tried to see if the dvi works because at the time i did not have this monitor..

The problem may be that you have your onboard video enabled as well as a standalone video card, and that is causing a conflict. Have you tried getting into BIOS and disabling the onboard video?
