I have a problem configurating the Default Depth. Please, help.

I have a Intel 82810-DC100 video card and a Compaq MV520 Monitor, and I'm using Slackware 8.1.

I don't know why I can not reach a Depth higher than 8 in the 1024x768 resolution. I have configured thousands of times the XF86Config... when I try whith Depth 16 or 24, the desktop becomes bigger than my physical screen. I realized that is the virtual desktop or something like that, but I can not get it to work properly.

Please HELP!

What should I do to get Depth 16 or 24 in 1024x768?

Thanks in advance.

just edit /etc/X11/XF86Config manually, and make sure that you have the resoluion you want defined in the correct depth section. saves an awful lot of farting around with silly GUI's. don't be too scared of editing it, it'll be really obvious what's wrong, but take a back up copy just in case. you really shouldn't need anything like a virtual desktop size or anything.
