Hello,
just joined here; so reply is pretty late. If you are still reading,
there are a couple of solutions. For color printing without images,
bjc610a1.upp gives fine output and is reasonably quick.
I use the following simple shell script, say lprtxt, for printing:
---- cut here ----
#!/bin/sh

[ "$#" = "0" ] && echo "Usage: `basename $0` file" && exit 1

gs -q -dBATCH -sOutputFile=- @bjc610a1.upp $@ | lpr -oraw
----- cut here -----

After placing it in PATH and making it executable, postscript
documents can be printed by lprtxt <file>.
Try bjc610a0.upp for faster printing, though i dont find much
difference. bjc610a8.upp can also be tried for slightly better
output, though i suspect it consumes more ink.

For making it faster, you can try turboprint drivers from
http://www.turboprint.de/english.html. After installation, printers
can be added by xtpsetup. Configuration is using xtpconfig, which
has a Low mode which prints really fast but consumes more ink.
Never tried Draft mode which should be faster still. In the
trial version, resolutions greater than Medium result in a turboprint
logo being printed.
