Question I cant detect my Video players in SuSE 10.3 using my Hauppauge BT878

Hi!

Could anyone help me with this problem? I am currently in Sweden so everything should run on PAL! But I have checked through all the other decoding settings aswell i.e. NTSC, NTSC-jp etc. All these settings are supported by the Hauppauge BT878.

The thing is my DVD Player works fine (its is a Sony) but Linux will not detect my Funai Video Player. Anyway I have tried changing about every setting that relates to it with no luck... but still I have a ton of Videos I want to watch.

So the last time I could watch a video on Linux was using SuSE 10.1, with that distro of SuSE it was no problem. But as soon as I changed to SuSE 10.2 it stopped working and I have had no luck with 10.3...

Anyway hope someone can help me with this Otherwise I will just have to install a special video watching version of 10.1 :P

Make sure the module bttv is loaded and use tvtime to test. Test its composite and S-Video inputs first if you can not tune channels or stations. Make sure you set tvtime for the right broadcast or norm. Also you may have audio problems since it needs an external audio chip to process the audio for that part of the world. You may also need to add the following in the module section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Load "v4l"

I just tried this but with no luck :/ But thanks for the idea Electro. The thing is if I go to "lsmod" in the terminal I have two "v4l" modules running they are:
"v4l_common 20688 4 tuner, tvaudio, bttv, videodev"
"v4l_compact 16388 2 bttv, videodev"

Then when I start video viewer (kdetv) I have 3 different options under the video tab:
"video4linux2: BT878 Video (Hauppague (bt878))"
"video4linux: BT878 Video (Hauppague (bt878))"
"Xvideo: video4linux (port 132)"

The only one of these 3 that supports "Video plugin supports signal strength readback" is "video4linux: BT878 Video (Hauppague (bt878))". But even though it says that signal strength is supported I can not identify the video players.

Dont know if this info clarifies my problem or not. But any ideas are appreciated.

Your computer has loaded up bttv module and that is it. The other modules you are seeing are modules to translate video for linux version 2 to video for linux version 1, tvaudio, and video capture device node. Kernel version 2.6.x uses video 4 linux version 2.

Use tvtime to test with your card. I think kdetv is poor for setup and tv viewing.

The signal strength option is not what you are looking for. In any program, you have to look for the norm or broadcast carrier type. I suggest test the card with S-Video or composite (RCA or phono).

Hi!

I finally managed to solve this, though I still don't know what the problem really was.
What I did was to uninstall absolutely everything to do with video playing, from the tv players to the codexs for playing *.avi's. I then proceeded with installing everything again, starting with the most basic files, and then proceeded with installing more and more complicated files.

What I think was the problem was that I installed the tv-playing software when I installed SuSE. So there was probably some type of conflict between the different processes.

Hopefully if someone has the same problem that I did this will be some kind of help

peace!
