I cannot use /dev/dsp with VLC player

When using other applications I get good sound, but when I use
VLC player, the debug information I read is that I am not allowed to open /dev/dsp.
I tried as root as well, without any luck.
I have googled around. And tried most of the solutions proposed. Didn't work.
I have Mandrake 10.2 with ALSA as standard, and I added AOSS (trying to sort another issue I have with Audacity not seeing my sound card).

Any idea what I can try next?

Thanks
