Two problems. All files that are downloaded from the server are corrupt when the end user downloads. I have checked and the files before sending then and they are fine, if I send the files another way (like cd-rom or zip disk) they are also fine, so not sure if its the IDE controller (recently purchased a new PCI IDE controller, still doing it). Also this past time I rebooted the server and I was getting start up errors on /usr/local where it would not let me boot past that point, and then told me I need to fix it, and took me to a maintenance screen ???? what the hell is that and what can I do. I NEED the data off the drive that is having the issue booting.
The stuff on the other disk is client stuff. Backup client stuff.
You could test whether it is the controller or the hard drive by swapping hard drives between two controllers. You also have to change /etc/fstab and probably your bootloader when you make the swap. Then see if the errors follow the hard drive to the other controller or if the errors remain on the suspect controller.
"took me to a maintenance screen ???? what the hell is that and what can I do. I NEED the data off the drive that is having the issue booting."
You may need to run fsck on the suspect partition. Boot a rescue CD and run fsck against whatever partition boot is failing on. While you are at it you might run fsck against every partition. There may be other bad partitions that would fail after you got past the first bad partition.
Have you considered using one of the live CDs, such as Knoppix or Slacklive? These would allow you to mount your partitions and save your data. You can either go to their websites or search for information.
Try this link from IBM which tells you what to do to recover your system with Knoppix.
Okay I have the data HD on my Windows machine but I have no access to it, I cant see it are there any Windows recovery programs that I can use to get the data off this disk?
A different thought: When you are downloading the files, and they end up being "corrupt" after the download, maybe it's because your browser is automatically uncompressing them following the download. I was having this problem myself, where I'd attempt to d/l a compressed file that was maybe 7 Mg in size, but after the download finished, the size suddenly and mysteriously had ballooned to something like 24 Mg. I just could not figure out what was going on, until LQ came to the rescue. As I described, the issue was just that my browser was automatically uncompressing the file for me. As I recall, I think the solution was just to d/l using FTP rather than HTTP. I don't know if this has any bearing on your situation, but on the off chance it does, I figured it might be worth mentioning. -- J.W.
I'm using wget from the Linux shell, or I use ftp or scp via the shell. Anyway getting a new motherboard and HD to see which on it is, my feeling its the motherboard since if I do anything with the HDs on another machine they are fine.
