I've killed sound -- Ubuntu 7.10 x64, Realtek HD Audio

Ubuntu 7.10 x64 configured my sound on install (integrated Intel ICH9 Realtek HD Audio), and it worked, but was faint. I followed these instructions (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto), but the directory /proc/asound/card0/ didn't exist, and the end result was just dead sound. How can I get my sound back to at least the way that it was upon install?

Hi MathBluster, Have you tried uninstalling the new packages and reinstalling the original packages? There are some other things to try with the new packages. There are more troubleshooting tips here.

Here's the solution in case anyone needs it later. I'm not sure whether it was one or both of these solutions that fixed it, but hey, it can't hurt.

install alsa-source, then runn module-assistant. It does all the building and installing for you, just select the package.

remove and reinstall linux-ubuntu-modules
