I'm new on linux heeeeeelp pls

:( Hi all
Since 2 weeks ago I've installed mandrake 10.1 and I download the drivers for my video card wich is nvidia fx 5200 .
As I putted on the subject am new on linux and I don't know how to make to work the video card, when I installed linux the kde worked fine but not the 3d so that I need to install the driver. anyway
after install the driver I used the vi to edit the XF86Config how say the manual.
the only thing that I changed is the nv for nvidia. I didn't find the dri or glx to remove.
When i try to use the startx this message apear
Failed to initialize the nvidia kernel module
**************aborting*********
Looking for information en other places someone says that I must update the kernel.
the kernel is 2.6.8.1-10mdk on an i686 /tty1
for the 2.6.8.0-12mdk . if is this the problem pls let me know and the most important who to do it.
I can't get in the Kde so I can't use internet to download it.
If anyone can help I'll be very pleased I know this is easy for many peoply but not for me am new on this and on the information wich is nvidia web is for those who have already exp.
From now thanks for any help

If you type lsmod on a command line what is the output? You might have to load the nvidia kernel module (modprobe nvidia) before you start X.

If doing a modprobe nvidia first fixes your problem then I'll tell you how to make it to that automatically at boot.

hi guys
first of all
thanks so much for reply.
this is what I did
when I type Ismod says
-bash: Ismod: command not found
and I type modprobe nvidia is the same
-bash: modprobe: command not found.
I don't have any idea how to take this or what can I do.
I'll give more info about my computer
motherboard:asus A7N8X-E DELUXE
AMD ATHLON (TM) XP 2800
and the video card fx 5200 , I don't know if is gonna be usefull this but just in case.

Are you the root user when you run those commands? lsmod (first letter is a lower case L... stands for list modules). On most systems you have to be root to use those commands.

If you don't have them then your going to need to find/install your distro's modutils package.

Charlys 02-21-2005 12:43 PM

YES
I did this as a root

jtshaw 02-21-2005 12:54 PM

Can you echo $PATH and make sure /sbin and /usr/sbin are in your path?

I find it very hard to believe your distribution doesn't have modutils...

What distribution/version are you running?

I'm gonna try that $ PATH finish to work.
the os is
mandrake 10.1 community
and the kernel 2.6.8.1-10mdk on an i686 /tty1.

the thing is when I log out from kde on the console say
(EE) NVIDIA (0) : Failed to load GLX

SetClientVersion : 08

and the 3d games don't work
