I'm looking for a dependable KVM switch
I have a little Belkin click KVM that seems to work OK until I try to load XGL and beryl or compiz, then the monitor is no longer visible. Maybe it isn't the switch but I haven't figured out anything else and have heard that some switchs do cause problems. I usually try to address hardware issues first and then get into the software.
Any suggested brands or models anyone has used would be appreciated. 4 port and cheap would be really great, then I could even build another box or two "on the side" (gods know I have enough spare box parts around). |
Are you using video res higher than the KVM can handle?

Brian's suggestion is an excellent one, but as a side note, I personally had trouble with Belkin KVM's. I use a Trendnet TK-401R and would recommend it highly. If you switch KVM's, be sure to confirm that your KVM cables are compatible

Thanks J.W. and Brian1. That's a great suggestion on the video res and I appreciate having the name of tried KVM.
I checked the specs on the Belkin flip KVM and the size is no problem (I'm below that) but it says it's @ 65 hz. My res is nomally @ H 30 - 81KHz and V 50 - 75Hz on either box. Since all settings seem to operate independently I think I need to find out what the correct sync ranges are that match-what to give me the 65 Hz V. First lesson learned is that the refresh rate doesn't seem to influence the sync since I set it down to 60 but nothing else changed. |
No ideas on myself. I have a Cybex 8 port. Now Avocent is the name. All systems use ps/2 mouse and keyboards. Have heard of issues with USB units but that is on lower grade units. No idea abut Avocent units. They are expensive but never had a problem.

JerryP,
J.W. recommends the Trendnet TK-401R and I agree with him. Best KVM I've used with Linux. Make sure you buy the matching cables. Scott |
i use a good old mechanical switch
never a problem except one box doesnt like having its mouse unplugged just a old fashioned thought |
