Huawei EC 1260 to work on Hardy-Heron


I am having trouble with my new Huawei USB modem .
It gets detected and lsusb shows me the vendor id and product id as
12d1 : 140b Huawei Technologies Pvt Ltd
but the device does not create any entry in /dev/ttyUSB*
am i missing something ?

Looks like Hardy is about two years old. The links I see to make it work all reference newer Ubuntu:
