Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

At the risk of showing my ignorance, I thought I would see if I could get a bit of help figuring out what my problem is. Here is the scenario:
1. Motherboard: EPOX 4PCA3+ with integrated highpoint controller.
2. (6) identical maxtor 200GB drives - 4 connected to the highpoint controller as masters. the two other are on IDE0 as master and slave (jumpered)
3. running RH 9 on a 2.4.20-9 SMP kernel
4. 32MB nvidia video card (RIVA TNT)
This system has been reconstructed. I had a fully working configuration that included more hardware, but this system is intended to act as a server.
As I was transfering the contents of the RAID to the single disk I experienced freezes. I wasn't totally surprised by this, but I don't have an explainantion for it. I started rebuilding my RAID (a raid 5 with 4 disks), and the system locked up during the build. This has never happend to me before.
I have a feeling that the video card is actually a factor here. It would be great if I could find some sort of diagnostic output to help me isolate the problem. Right now I have no log messages to work with.
