HP960c Deskjet -- should I use CUPS or HPLIP?

Hi,

I have an HP960c Deskjet color printer. I recently upgraded from Mepis 3.43 to Mepis 6.0 and had to redo my printer set-up. I'm stuck.

So, I went to my usual (bookmarked) cups / hplip pages. It looks like both CUPS and HPLIP have undergone major changes since I last had to mess with them (5 or 6 months ago).

Do I need both CUPS and HPLIP to make my printer work? If I only need one, which would you recommend for a tech idiot like me, who needs everything to be kept simple.

Really, I just don't understand the difference between the two of them. I just know that somehow, I got CUPS to work on my old set-up and managed it through some weird loopback thing.

I welcome your thoughts. Thanks!

Mepis should already have CUPS installed. Go to http://hplip.sourceforge.net/index.html
and get the latest HPLIP and install it also. Connect your printer, power it up and start up MEPIS. It should detect your HP 960c and use the HPLIP file for the drivers and all the maintenance features available for your HP 960c.

BTW, The HP 960c is a great work printer and Mepis is very good, good reliable choices.

Yup....I just got it working on my fresh Mepis 6.0 install. . .now off to mom's house to save the day over there. . .LOL.

This time, I used the "KDE" printer manager thingy. I was surprised at how simple it was. Earlier (months ago) I had to loopback, go to some localhost631 or something like that...it was a PITA for a n00b. That was on Mepis 3.43...I suppose I could have done the same "KDE" set-up back then as well.

I'm not so sure what the difference is between the two, but I am glad I found an easier method (note to Mepis developers: the more simple you keep it for us n00bs, the better!!! Keep it up!!!)
