HP screen has yellow line

Hi,

My HP 17" lcd monitor (HP1740) sometimes has a vertical, thin yellow line, about two inches in from the right hand side, runing from top to bottom of the screen. I can't tie this to any particular application or activity. I mostly use Firefox, Thunderbird and Abiword.

Anyone have any ideas about overcoming this, please?

Most likely it is a failure internal to the monitor. I have a portable LCD video monitor that has a similar line (it is on the left instead of the right). At least in the US it would probably cost more to fix it then to purchase a new one.

Oh dear! I was rather hoping it would be a software glitch that could easily be fixed.

However, if I do have to buy another monitor, could you recommend any make that it likely to be good and durable?

The problem could also be the video card. The only way to know this is test it with a known working monitor that does not have the problem.

I suggest a NEC EA231WMi (23 inch LCD, 1920 by 1080, IPS). It is cheap for its performance. It gets its performance from being IPS based LCD panel. I have not read about how it ages compared to other brands that uses an IPS based LCD monitors. LG makes IPS based LCD panels, so quality is not high as other LCD panel manufactures. IPS are known for their ability to view at wide angles. TN based LCD screens are known for their speed but they lack 24-bit color and have poor viewing angles.

Thank you electro. I'll have a look at the NEC models of the type you recommend.
