HP Scanner 2400c not responding to xsane

My thread "HP scanner found but not supported", Sept,08 refers.
XSANE now recognises my scanner after uncommenting it in genesys.conf, but when the xsane scan icon is clicked, although it says "scanning" and "Receiving RGB data", the scanner carriage doesn't move, resulting in a half white and half black image.
The HP recommended "self-test" works OK.
All I have read about this scanner being unsupported seems pretty dated, but is this still the case, and is there any remedy?
libsane-hpaio is installed, and I'm running Fedora 9

I've found in the sane devel archives that folk are actually working on this, so I'll just have to be patient!
